Can I use “trick” or “tricks” as a term to describe techniques or tactics for an out-of-mainstream sport?
I’m writing a scene where a character is describing some fake wrestling moves from one of his competitors, and I’m trying to find a word to describe his technique for the move.
I can think of a few word-choices like fakes, decoys, put-ons, techniques, and tricks, but I’m not sure if any of them would be exactly what I want (all of them seem to be things that are used in wrestling, not the whole of the sport).
I don’t know if it is as specific as techniques in wrestling, but tricking might be the closest to what you want:
3. (informal) To attempt to deceive
4. (informal) To deceive someone by means of trickery or deception.
2. (informal) To deceive or fool by cunning; to win the trust of someone by deceit.
3. (informal) An act that uses deceit to win; a game or play; trick.
These both come from M-W, but I can’t seem to find trick described with the first meaning there.
Without getting into language politics, a trick can be:
a clever feat; sometimes: (n) an act of trickery or deception.
I realize this question is really old, but I stumbled on it via google, and I would really like to know what other answers use as well.
So far I have found some different answers:
A less direct one is to use false blows. But this doesn’t really encapsulate the feel of a cheat.
They could be “fakes,” or “put-ons,” which are clearly not the same thing as fakes.
They could be known as “trick moves,” or “cheating moves.” But I can’t say that I really like this.
The issue for Australia has been largely policy-wonk politics: Either the Coalition wants to end the carbon tax, has already done so by implementing Direct Action and other policy-free
